Glow
Santa Monica, CA

The second installation of Fiber Optic Flowers that seemed to grow out of the trees on the 3rd Street Promenade
Commissioned by the City of Santa Monica
Santa Monica Palisades Park between Colorado and Broadway, and the 3rd Street Promenade
Glow was the first all-night art event in the United States that emphasizes the commissioning of original artwork. Glow projects invite active audience engagement and exploration and constantly surprise in their unexpected placement in spaces and times not normally reserved for fine art.
Koenig had the honor of being the only artist asked to do two installations for this incredible event.
Palisades Park was transformed with beautiful organic light sculptures. During the day they look like exotic flowers hanging in the trees, as the sun sets and the crystals catch the light they filled the surrounding area with refracted rainbows. This was truly a “magic hour”. Then as the sun sank into sea the viewer’s felt like they were transported to the bottom of the ocean as flowers turned into bio-luminescent deep sea creatures.
At night participants got to experience the sea from above and below. They could look up and see deep sea creatures or look down and see the ocean below.
The highlight was the piece they controlled on an iPad!
